Approximately 300 women from across Southern Maryland received valuable information on a range of women’s health and lifestyle topics at Southern Maryland Hospital’s first Women’s Health and Empowerment Retreat.  The event took place on Saturday, October 22 at the Colony South Hotel in Clinton.

After enjoying a continental breakfast, participants attended break-out sessions on a wide variety of health topics. Physicians specializing in cardiology, orthopedic surgery, allergy and immunology, plastic surgery, female urology, weight loss surgery and sleep medicine gave informative presentations and answered questions from attendees. A registered dietician discussed heart-healthy nutrition, and an attorney talked about financial planning. Participants also had the option of attending an informational walk-about, in which women-focused organizations and businesses provided information and sold items from health products to jewelry. The facial skin analysis computer station was especially popular.

The retreat’s highlight came during the afternoon, as motivational speaker Dr. Lonise Bias delivered an inspirational keynote address during lunch. Her presentation, “The Best is Yet to Come!” delighted the audience with its thought-provoking message encouraging women to reach new horizons in their personal development and outlook. She discussed personal tragedies that took place in her life and inspired attendees to lift themselves up after life’s challenges.

The event’s participants rated The Women’s Health and Empowerment Retreat an unqualified success, and planning is already in process for next year’s retreat.
