ANNAPOLIS, Md. — Annapolis is calling on its young Hispanic and Latin American writers to submit their work to this year’s edition of “Around Each Corner.”

All poets who live or study in Annapolis are encouraged to submit an original poem for the book. The theme is inspired by the poem “Where I’m From” by George Ella Lyon. Young poets can submit their own poems to create a “literary painting of one’s most memorable childhood moments, family traditions and their culture that made them who they are.” Interested poets should submit their work using the form. All submissions need to be received by Aug. 17.

In addition to their poem, the form will also ask writers for information about the poet and invite them to submit an accompanying, optional piece of artwork to go along with their poem.

This is a collaborative project by the City of Annapolis, the Organization of Hispanics/Latin Americans of Anne Arundel County, the Center of Help/Centro de Ayuda, the Chesapeake Children’s Museum and Annapolis Poet Laureate Jefferson Holland. The project got its start in 2021 as a classroom initiative of Mrs. Romey Pittman, where young people were asked to share poetry that told their stories, backgrounds, experiences, lives and traditions.

The Office of Hispanic Community Services is holding a contest for the book’s cover art. Young Latin artists are encouraged to submit an original piece of art by Aug. 12 and can submit their entry here. All submissions that comply with city guidelines will be displayed in the City Hall Latin Art Gallery during Hispanic Heritage Month.

The book will be published later this year during Hispanic Heritage Month, which is from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15, giving young artists the opportunity to see their work in print.
