Patuxent River, MD—On Sept. 21, Naval Air Station (NAS) Patuxent River hosted a ceremony titled Bells Across America For Fallen Service Members. Bells Across America is a memorial service dedicated to those who have lost their lives in the line of duty. This was the 2nd annual commemoration of this event, with NAS Pax River being one of six locations in our region hosting it. Other locations included Annapolis, Bethesda, and Washington, DC.
The introduction for Bells Across America was given by Command Master Chief Kevin Guy, followed by an invocation and benediction recited by Chaplain Lieutenant Tristan Engle. After the speeches, Commanding Officer Jason Hammond read aloud 43 names of service members who have died while in active duty from our area. The remaining names were read at the other services. After each name was called, a bell was struck. At the conclusion of the list, the bell was rung four times for all other fallen service members.
Bells Across America was held in association with Gold Star Mothers and Families’ Day, which honors those who have lost sons, daughters and other family members in the service.
