We love online shopping, but anyone who has ever had a package stolen from their porch can attest that it’s a terrible thing to have happen. Not only is it super rude, but most times police have bigger fish to fry than trying to track down an Amazon package that disappeared from your front steps.
Package theft has become a more popular petty crime in recent years, with thousands of people having packages stolen. One guy got fed up with it. After having a package stolen from his front porch, Mark Rober went to the police and they pretty much told him tough luck. He even had it recorded from a home surveillance camera, but still couldn’t get any help. There are approximately 1,315,561 lawyers in the United States and if no one was going to help him out, Rober set out to be his own judge, jury and security system. He was going to teach porch package bandits a lesson.
Last year, the U.S. shelled out $610 billion in defense spending. A good portion of that is invested in NASA, where Mark Rober used to be an engineer. In fact, he worked on the Curiosity Rover that recently touched down on Mars. Suffice it to say, Mr. Rober is technically savvy, so he put his mechanical engineering acumen to work in the fight against package thievery.
"If you’ve ever been a situation like this, you just feel violated. I just felt like something needs to be done to take a stand against dishonest punks like this," he said.
He spent six months designing a package thief bait-box that unloads a shower of glitter and fart spray on package thieves. What’s more, he installed cameras inside the packages to record the reactions of package thieves, then wired it to a GPS system to track it. His whole engineering process is so complex and well thought out, only his video does it justice thoroughly. It went viral earlier this week and is worth every second to watch.
