At Dr. Samuel A. Mudd Elementary School, teachers were decked out in their college gear this week, showcasing the importance of higher education. A colorful map is stretched across a bulletin board, identifying the locations of all the colleges the school’s staff attended, which demonstrates the range of colleges available.
This week, as a part of American Education Week, teachers are sharing with students how they got into college, the significance of their college experience and how it prepared them to become educators. The activity at Mudd is one of many across the school system to celebrate American Education Week.
This year’s theme is “Great Public Schools: A Basic Right and Our Responsibility.” Each day during the week spotlights a different aspect of school life. Monday is Open House Day, Tuesday is Parents Day, Wednesday is Education Support Professionals Day, Thursday is Educator for a Day and Friday is Substitute Educators Day.
At Milton M. Somers Middle School, morning announcements highlight famous American educators and offer inspirational quotes. On Tuesday, parents were invited to have lunch with their students. To celebrate Educator for a Day on Thursday, the Future Educators Association (FEA) club will job-shadow educators throughout the school.
