On Friday Nov. 11, an awards ceremony was held at Chancellors Run Senior Center, following the public celebrations of Veterans’ Day in Leonardtown. Maryland Senator Roy Dyson presented a number of citations from the Senate, the House of Delegates, and the St. Mary’s County Commissioners. However, one of the recipients of such citations, Chief Walking Bear of the Cherokee Nation, had his own surprise citation to proffer.

Chief Walking Bear spoke fondly of veteran Clancy Lyall, who was instrumental in organizing the Veterans’ Day celebrations in St. Mary’s County. He announced the discovery that Clancy was part Cherokee, and proceeded to present Clancy with a certificate. Chief Walking Bear accepted Clancy as Native American, and rechristened him appropriately.

“Clancy Lyall hereafter will be known as Silver Eagle!” declared Walking Bear.
