Candidates Make Their Case To Voters
Congressman Steny Hoyer and his challenger, Chri Palombi, both want to represent the 5th Congressional District. Hoyer says he’s done a good job looking out for voters for nearly 40 years. Palombi thinks it’s time for a change.
When asked if he had a message for voters, Hoyer spoke about how much he enjoyed the four decades he’s spent representing the 5th District. “Look, I simply want to say that I have lived in St. Mary’s County and Southern Maryland all of my life, if you count Prince George’s County-which used to be Southern Maryland. I went to Suitland High School, University of Maryland, and Georgetown Law School.
In 1992, we had redistricting, so I have represented St. Mary’s, Charles, and Calvert County since 1993. I love living here. I love being your Congressman. If you decide that I’ve done a good job for you and think I represent the values I think America holds dear, then I would certainly very much appreciate your vote. I love this job.”
Palombi said it’s time for a change. “Maryland’s 5th Congressional District needs fresh and invigorating representation. One that’s not hampered by special interests or political aspirations, but one that is going to be there and work for you, the citizens of Maryland’s 5th District, first and foremost. Like many constituents within the district, I’m personally tired of the partisan gridlock we have in Capitol Hill. It’s been going on for 40 years, and it’s only gotten worse over time. It’s from both parties. And I witnessed the dysfunction in Washington during my time as a U.S. Capitol Police Officer on Capitol Hill. It’s time to end the status quo. There’s a better way to govern. It’s time to bring back true representative government. One that works for the people and by the people.”
Job Worth Doing
Hoyer said it’s the people that made the job worth doing. “I get to deal with wonderful, wonderful people in this district. I get to have a sense of accomplishment every day. Even if we only help one person that day, I feel a sense of accomplishment. My district office, that’s so important, people have Social Security, veterans, disability benefits. One of our farmers needs some help with the Ag department or one of our military families needs help with the Pentagon. This is a tough job, but it’s also a wonderful job.”
Palombi said he’s open to all points of view. “My political beliefs, they’re not going to be 100% aligned with anybody. We all have unique perspectives in life. It takes those kinds of conversations and open dialogue to elevate each other and springboard ideas. It isn’t so much a left vs. right issue anymore. Most of us have the same goal in life. It’s having our freedom, our rights, our liberties, our ability to have a safe and secure home for our families, and the ability for everyone to equally have opportunities to prosper. Those are worth fighting for.”

Congressman Hoyer said it’s a simple decision. “If you think I’ve done well, and you think I can represent you well in the future, I’d appreciate your vote.”
