SOMERSET N.J. – The Southern Maryland Blue Crabs and Somerset Patriots played game two of a doubleheader in Somerset on Wednesday following a midday matinee. The Blue Crabs won, 6-4.The Crabs victory gives Somerset their first loss of 2016.
The scoring started in the second with Somerset jumping out to a 2-0 lead after a Scott Kelly RBI single and an Darwin Perez groundout. They pushed their lead to 3-0 in the fourth with a Robert Kral sac-fly. Southern Maryland responded in the fifth with a Steve Lombardozzi RBI single making it a 3-2 ballgame.
Later in the seventh with a 4-2 Somerset lead, Lombardozzi kicked off a rally with a RBI single. Newcomer D’Arby Myers hit an RBI triple, he later scored on a Zach Wilson sac-fly officially putting the Blue Crabs ahead for good by a score of 5-4. Fred Lewis padded the lead in the eighth with a solo home run.
Starter Jon Leicester went six innings, allowing all four of Somerset’s runs. He struck out one and allowed 6 hits in the win. He was the pitcher of record. Jeff Urlaub and Cody Eppley pitched in relief, Eppley earned the save.
The Blue Crabs are in Somerset tomorrow for the finale of the four game series, they return home on Friday for a three game series against York.
