On Jan. 9, Maryland Natural Resources Police (NRP) and Maryland State Police (MSP) rescued William B. Murdoch V, 29, of Easton, who was duck hunting in his 16-foot open boat on the Blackwater River near Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge in Dorchester County.

Murdoch became disoriented at sunset and called 911 on his cell phone at 7:30 p.m. NRP responded to the area but could not reach Murdoch due to the outgoing tide in the marsh.

An trooper helicopter was called in to the area and air lifted Murdoch from his vessel.

Murdoch was located from the air because he had working navigational lights on his vessel.

Maryland Wildlife and Heritage Service personnel and U.S. Fish and Wildlife personnel assisted with the incident.
