St. Mary's Animal Welfare League Mascot

SMAWL mascot entertain the kids

Leonardtown, MD – Leonardtown was a scary place on Saturday, Oct. 22. That’s when all the ghosts and goblins descended on the town for the annual Trick or Treat on the Square.

The sunny, breezy weather was fitting for a Mary Poppins costume. Merchants all around town were open to dispense goodies to the hundreds of costumed kids (we didn’t see Mary Poppins) who packed the town. Some merchants dispensed the treats inside their establishments. Others set up tables outside. Regardless, there were lines at each business. One proprietor told TheBayNet.com that after 45 minutes she had given out 400 treats and had run out.

In addition to the ‘Trick or Treating’, the St. Mary’s Animal Welfare League (SMAWL) was on hand with their dog mascot to interact with the children. Many people brought their pooches with them, most of which were dressed in Halloween costumes. They posed for their pictures with SMAWL volunteers.

There was also face painting for the kids on another part of the town square – extra creativity to complement the costumes.

The was held at a new time this year from 3 to 5 p.m. – and that time seemed to suit the attendees judging from the large crowd.

Trick or Treating on the Square is sponsored by the Commissioners of St. Mary’s County and the Leonardtown Business Association.
