The Calvert County Board of Education (BOE) has announced its appointment of an interim superintendent for the 2013-2014 school year. The Board has selected Nancy V. Highsmith, principal of Patuxent High School (PHS), to lead Calvert County Public Schools (CCPS) until a permanent superintendent is selected next year through a forthcoming national search.

“The Board of Education carefully considered a number of highly qualified candidates from within the county before deciding that Ms. Highsmith is best suited to lead our school system through the upcoming school year,” BOE President Dr. Eugene Karol said. “We have complete confidence in her.”

Highsmith was formally appointed at a special Board of Education meeting Wednesday evening, June 26. She is the first woman to hold CCPS’ top staff position.

“I look forward to a smooth transition, working collaboratively with all departments, unions, principals and staff to meet the challenges that lay ahead,” Highsmith said. “We have a great system. We do have challenges to overcome in order to get even better, and I am very confident that as a system we can persevere, as we always have.”

The lifelong Marylander has served Calvert County’s students for 33 years, starting as a social studies teacher in 1980 at Northern High School. She previously served as a learning specialist, dean and vice principal, and she was principal at Calvert Middle School before assuming the reins at PHS in 2005.

Highsmith graduated from Frostburg State College in 1979 with a bachelor’s of science in social science and secondary education. She earned a master’s degree in administration and supervision in 1988 from Bowie State College.
