Ms. Mary Kaye Roper was named a recipient of the Simon A. McNeely Honor Award at the annual convention of the Maryland Association of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (MAHPERD) on October 21, 2005. 

Ms. Roper is a physical education teacher assigned to Hollywood Elementary School.  In addition to her valuable contribution to quality physical education programs in St. Mary’s County Public Schools, Ms. Roper has played a key role in the organization of special programs such as Jump Rope for Heart, fundraising for a horizontal traverse climbing wall, annual physical education shows such as P.E. on Broadway, Family Fitness Night, and “Taking steps to aid the victims of Hurricane Katrina.”  Ms. Roper has participated in curriculum writing workshops at the state level and served as a School Visitation Team member for the Maryland Physical Education Demonstration School Project.

The Simon A. McNeely Honor Award is presented to those individuals who have demonstrated active involvement in school and community affairs, along with outstanding teaching and service in the field of physical education.  Ms. Roper was nominated by her assistant principal, Ms. Sabra Reagle Szczyglowski, who was a prior recipient of the award.
