LAUREL, Md. – A Prince George’s County woman with a penchant for pretzels was twisted up in knots from excitement after a trip to a local convenience store led to a $100,000 scratch-off win. Her lucky instant ticket is the new $30 offering from the Maryland Lottery’s trio of “Lucky” scratch-offs that hit retailer shelves last week.
The 37-year-old healthcare worker told Lottery officials that hunger for one of her favorite snacks played a role in her big win. She had originally planned to buy a soft pretzel and a brownie when she and her husband set out for the nearby Wawa. However, while there, the couple decided to add a pair of scratch-offs to the purchase.
“My husband is the lucky one and he picked out a scratch-off for each of us,” she said.
The Laurel residents headed out to their truck with their purchases and excitement soon followed. The wife scratched off her $100,000 Lucky instant ticket, revealing a stack-of-cash emblem and began to reveal the prize in the couple’s unique way.
“He likes to draw out the drama of the win, so you have to reveal the prize starting with the last digit and working your way up,” she said. Following their routine, she began uncovering zeros, one after the other, until she revealed the game’s $100,000 top prize.
“I was quiet, more shocked than anything,” she said, “and I had to just let it sink in.”
The lucky lady said she plans to use some of the prize to pay down debt. She added that the rest of the prize would go toward helping her growing family find a home.
The $100,000 Lucky instant ticket went on sale on Sept. 20, featuring thousands of prizes and 65 $100,000 top prizes. With this win, there are 62 top prizes remaining.
The store that sold the Lottery scratch-off also can celebrate. For its role, Wawa #8515 located at 9600 Fort Meade Road in Laurel will earn a $1,000 retailer bonus from the Lottery.
