MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital Five-Star Healthgrades Recipient
Leonardtown, MD – Heathgrades announced on Tuesday, Oct. 18 that MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital has achieved 5-stars for its performance in the Treatment of Heart Attack, Total Knee Replacement, Treatment of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, Bowel Obstruction (for the second year, 2016-2017) and for Treatment of Gallbladder Removal Surgery. Healthgrades is the leading online resource helping consumers make informed decisions to find the right doctor or the right hospital for the right care.
“We are extremely proud of all of our associates and physicians for the incredible work they do each day to provide the best possible care for every one of our patients,” said Christine Wray, president, MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital. “Achieving 5-star ratings in five different clinical areas shows that MedStar St. Mary’s is highly dedicated to providing quality care.”
This achievement is part of new findings and data released this month by Healthgrades and is featured in the Healthgrades 2017 Report to the Nation. Every year, Healthgrades evaluates hospital performance at nearly 4,500 hospitals nationwide for 34 of the most common inpatient procedures and conditions.*
“Hospitals that have achieved Healthgrades 5-stars in these multiple clinical achievements have demonstrated a commitment to exceptional quality care for their patients,” said Evan Marks, Chief Strategy Officer, Healthgrades. “In an environment where consumers have more choices about where to receive their care, a hospital’s commitment to achieving a superior degree of quality for their patients is more important than ever.”
The new report demonstrates how clinical performance continues to differ dramatically between hospitals regionally and nationally. This variation in care has a significant impact on health outcomes. For example, from 2013-2015, if all hospitals as a group, performed similarly to hospitals receiving 5-stars as a group, on average 223,412 lives could potentially have been saved and 162,215 complications could potentially have been avoided.** A 5-star rating indicates that MedStar St. Mary’s clinical outcomes are statistically significantly better than expected when treating the condition or performing the procedure being evaluated.
Additionally, for the 2017 Report to the Nation, Healthgrades compared hospitals with statistically better than expected performance (5-stars), as a group, to those with statistically worse than expected performance (1-star), as a group, and found;
From 2013-2015, patients having tottal knee replacement in hospitals with 5-stars have, on average:
▸ 67.2 percent lower risk of experiencing a complication while in the hospital than if they were treated by hospitals with 1-star.*
From 2013-2015, patients treated for heart attack in hospitals with 5-stars for in-hospital mortality have, on average:
▸ 48.8 percent lower risk of dying than if they were treated in hospitals with 1-star for in-house mortality.*
▸ 2.0 times more likely to die than if they were treated in hospitals with 5-stars for in-hospital mortality.*
*For its analysis, Healthgrades evaluated approximately 45 million Medicare inpatient records for nearly 4,500 short-term acute care hospitals nationwide, assessing hospital performance relative to each of 32 common conditions and procedures, as well as an evaluation of comparative outcomes in appendectomy and bariatric surgery using all-payer data provided by 18 states. Healthgrades recognizes a hospital’s quality achievements for cohort-specific performance, specialty area performance, and overall clinical quality. Individual procedure or condition cohorts are designated as 5-star (statistically significantly better than expected), 3-star (not statistically different from expected) and 1-star (statistically significantly worse than expected) categories. **Statistics are based on Healthgrades analysis of MedPAR data for years 2013 through 2015 and represent 3-year estimates for Medicare patients only.
