In the final home series of the 2014 season, the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs saw their 9th inning rally fall short against the Somerset Patriots as they fell 4-3 in the series opener at Regency Furniture Stadium. Southern Maryland remains three games back with five to play in the Freedom Division.

After Somerset scored a pair of runs in the top of the 9th to lead 4-1, Southern Maryland mounted a rally in the bottom half. With two outs and the bases loaded, James Skelton doubled in a pair of runs to bring the Blue Crabs within a run. But then with the tying run at third and the winning run at second, Bobby Stevens popped out to end the contest.

Josh Lowey (2-0) earned the win for the Patriots firing six innings without allowing an earned run. Ian Marshall (9-10) fell on the wrong side of .500 with the loss despite a quality start, giving up two runs over eight strong.

Jake Fox put the Patriots on the board right away in the 1st inning as his RBI double scored Jonny Tucker for the game’s first run. Mike Schwartz tied the game in the bottom of the 2nd with an RBI single that scored Steve Moss.

With two outs in the 4th, Daryle Ward regained the lead for Somerset with an RBI single to make it 2-1.
