At 8:51 a.m. Oct. 26, TFC P. Trossbach observed a vehicle which appeared to be traveling over the 55 mile per hour speed limit on Route 235 south of Route 247 in Mechanicsville. With radar it was determined the driver, Joseph Lee Underwood, 42, of Accokeek, was traveling at 90 mph.
When TFC Trossbach activated emergency equipment he observed the driver reach over to the passenger side several times before stopping.  Due to furtive movements, backup was requested.

After barrack commander Lt. B. Cedar arrived, the driver was contacted and a probable cause search was conducted, resulting in two straws containing suspected cocaine found under the passenger seat.
Underwood was arrested and charged with possession of cocaine and possession of CDS paraphernalia and taken to the St. Mary’s County Detention Center for processing and a bail hearing.
