INTERNATIONAL — Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, was confirmed by Buckingham Palace earlier today to have passed away at age 99.
Philip was a member of the British royal family and the husband of Elizabeth II. He notably served in World War II mainly in the Mediterranean and Pacific Fleets.
Just before he married Elizabeth, he was named “His Royal Highness” and initiated the “Duke of Edinburgh,” “Earl of Merioneth,” and “Baron Greenwich” by King George VI. He left his active military service once Elizabeth became the queen in 1952, having reached the rank of commander. He was dubbed a British prince in 1957.
He was also known to be the longest-serving consort of a reigning British monarch, and was the oldest male member of the British royal family. Philip retired from royal duties in 2017, at 96 years old.
He passed away two months prior to his 100th birthday.
