In a significant step for the future of clean energy in Maryland, today the Maryland Public Service Commission approved the merger of Constellation Energy Group and Exelon Corporation. The approval order requires the energy companies to take specific steps to significantly reduce energy waste and to develop clean energy resources like wind and solar in Maryland.

“The Commission’s order will mean more resources for energy efficiency and clean energy in Maryland,” said Josh Tulkin, Director of the Sierra Club’s Maryland chapter. “With the leadership of the Commission and the support of Maryland residents, we have achieved this milestone for clean energy, and in particular, offshore wind energy, which will bring good jobs to Maryland.”

The Commission’s order requires the development of 165-180 megawatts of new renewable resources in the State, including $32 million dedicated to fostering the development of offshore wind in Maryland, and $113.5 million dedicated to long-term energy assistance and energy-efficiency for Maryland ratepayers and business owners.
