St. Mary’s City, MD – An indoor event designed to raise funds to fight cancer drew an enthusiastic crowd Saturday, April 2. Relay For Life of St. Mary’s College of Maryland (SMCM) held an event called “Luau for Life” at the Michael P. O’Brien Athletics and Recreation Center.

A total of 16 teams—with names like “All Night for the Fight,” “SMCM A Cappella,” “SMCM Equestrian Rid for Life,” “Hawkettes” and “Super Paul”—participated in the 10-hour event.

The relay included several live musical performances, a “Jail-and-Bail” fundraiser, a Zumba workout and “Stuck for a Buck,” which involved several faculty members voluntarily allowing themselves taped to a wall with the aim to raise money.

The participants could sustain their pace by enjoying free food provided by several local businesses.

According to its web site, Relay For Life of SMCM’s nearly 200 participants raised almost $20,000 during the Luau for Life.

“We would like to extend special thanks to our dedicated team captains and committee members who have worked tirelessly to make this event a success,” stated Fran Rudolph and Leah Patterson, the event’s co-chairs.
