Annapolis, MD – On May 10th 2019 – Governor Larry Hogan delivered remarks today at the annual Maryland State Police Fallen Heroes Ceremony to honor the 43 state troopers who have died in the line of duty:

“Good morning. It is an honor and a privilege to be here, on behalf of all the people of Maryland, as we remember the lasting legacy and pay tribute to 43 of Maryland’s Finest. Forty-three men and women who, every single day, brought honor to their badge.

“We remember each of them today as true heroes not because of the way they died but because of the way they lived.

“They chose to answer the call to serve something greater than themselves. They chose a profession that often garners far too little appreciation but demands so much.

“These heroes are the ones who run toward the danger and put their lives on the line for the rest of us, all in the name of three core values: integrity, fairness, and service.

“The ultimate sacrifice of these fallen heroes is a debt which Marylanders can never repay, but the citizens of our state will forever be eternally grateful.

“We will continue to honor your loved ones for their service and for their sacrifice, and they will not ever be forgotten.

“As we honor these 43 Maryland State Police heroes, we also continue to pray for the families and loved ones who are left behind.

“Our state has lost far too many brave men and women who took an oath to serve and protect.

“Many of you here this morning have had to bear the profound grief and the unimaginable heartache of losing a spouse, a child, a parent, a brother or sister, or someone you loved.

“As we pay our respects to these fallen heroes, we also pray that those of you who loved them will continue to find comfort and strength.

“We pray that you find solace in knowing that there truly is no greater love than to lay down one’s life in service to others.

“The legacy of our MSP fallen heroes will forever live on through the countless lives that they touched throughout their incredible lives, and also through the other brave men and women of the Maryland State Police family.

“May your continued commitment—your lives and your actions—continue to carry on the goodness, the dedication, and the selfless service that marked the lives of your fallen MSP brothers and sisters.

“Each and every day, I witness the unwavering level of service in the men and women of the MSP.

“In a time when it may seem like some don’t appreciate the sacrifices that our troopers and other law enforcement officials make, I want you to know that I do appreciate every single one of you.

“As we honor the lives and the legacies of our fallen MSP heroes this morning, it is with the knowledge that they are part of a fellowship of heroes who are walking among us and protecting us each and every day.

“On behalf of all the people of an eternally grateful state, we say thank you.

“May God bless each and every one of our fallen heroes, their families, and all those who loved them, and may God continue to bless the Maryland State Police and the great State of Maryland.”
