MECHNANICSVILLE, Md. – A overnight fire caused an estimated half-million dollars worth of damage at a commercial lumbar yard, Friday,  Dec. 7. 

At approximately 1:42 a.m., units led by the Mechanicsville Volunteer Fire Department responded to the Sutphin Lumber Company located on 28540 Thompson Corner Road, Mechanicsville for the report of a fire.  

Upon arrival units discovered the saw mill fully involved with heavy fire showing from the structure. Throughout the incident, 50 firefights worked exterior operations for 45 minutes until the fire was controlled. 

An investigation by the Office of the State Fire Marshal revealed the cause of the fire to be accidental, “The fire occurred as the result of sawmill equipment igniting combustible materials within the interior of the structure.”. 

Authorities report that nobody was injured from the fire.
