In February of this year, the Charles County Commissioners enacted Bill #2010-15, Homeowners Tax Credit-Enhanced Supplement for Qualifying Seniors.  This tax credit became available to Charles County seniors starting in fiscal 2012, which began on July 1, 2011.

The Homeowner’s Tax Credit is a state program that limits the amount of property taxes due based on the owner’s income.  The state allows local subdivisions to create their own supplements to the Homeowner’s Tax Credit, which Charles County has done.

The requirements for eligibility are:
1) One of the homeowners must be at least 70 years of age;
2) One of the homeowners must have resided in the dwelling for more than twenty (20) years;
3) The homeowners must have a combined net worth of $200,000 or less; and
4) The homeowners must have a combined income of $50,000 or less.

There is a filing deadline of October 31, 2011, but this deadline does not apply to applicants age 70 and older.

The tax credit application is available online at: http://www.dat.state.md.us/sdatweb/HTC-60.pdf.
