The St. Mary’s College men’s basketball team trailed by just three points (48-45) with 11:24 remaining against Catholic on Wednesday evening but saw the Cardinals end the contest with a 27-10 run to claim a 75-55 Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) victory. With the win, Catholic improved to 10-3 overall and 2-1 in the conference while the Seahawks fell to 6-7 overall and 1-2 in the CAC with the loss.
Sophomore guard Tyson Lesesne (Edgewood, MD/Edgewood) scored a game-high 27 points on 10-of-18 shooting from the field for the Seahawks. Junior guard Valdez Preston (Dundalk, MD/Dundalk) was the only other player to reach double figures for the Seahawks as he added ten points and seven rebounds.
Catholic had five players reach double figures and was led by guard Pat Satalin with 14 points. Shane Sowden, Scott Fumai, and Patrick Dwyer all added ten points and eight rebounds while Matt Spierenburg scored ten points with five boards for the Cardinals.
St. Mary’s will return to action on Saturday, January 14, when they travel to York (Pa.) for another conference contest. The game is scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m.
The St. Mary’s College women’s basketball team lost their third consecutive contest on Wednesday evening with a 60-45 Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) loss at Catholic University. The Cardinals improved to 10-3 overall and 2-1 in the CAC with the win, while the Seahawks fell to 4-9 overall and 0-3 in league action with the loss.
Freshman forward Allie Scott (Laurel, MD/Atholton) posted a double-double for the Seahawks with ten points and ten rebounds. Sophomore guard Taylor Yearwood (Washington D.C./Holy Cross Academy) also scored ten points with eight rebounds.
Catholic was led by freshman center Kristen Linderoth with 17 points and 14 rebounds, both of which were game-highs. Junior forward Shannon Mertz tallied 16 points for the Cardinals who extended their winning streak to four games.
The Seahawks will return to action on Saturday, January 14, when they travel to York (Pa.) for another CAC contest. The game is scheduled to begin at 4:00 p.m.
