CROSSVILLE, Tenn. — Team Hollyrock from Hollyrock Customs in recently won the 8th Annual Rocky Top Diesel Shootout Pro Dragster on July 31, 2021.

The Rocky Top Diesel Shootout is a two-day event that features the fastest diesel-powered vehicles for over $30K in cash prizes and a truck show. The diesel drag race happened at Crossville Dragway for the Pro-Street, Pro-Mod, Pro-Dragster, E.T., 7.70, 6.70 and 5.90 index classes.

Before this event, Hollyrock faced a couple of challenges in other events, from mechanical difficulties to inclement weather. As a result, the team felt they had to seize the opportunity in front of them.

“Every event is important, but this one was more important because we knew the car was ready and there was potential we could win one. Our first two events that we went to either got rained out or we just had some mechanical issues,” Mattison Graves, team Hollyrock’s driver, said. “We had some high hopes going into this event. It just ended up working out for us.”

Additionally, this event meant a lot to Graves since it was her first time racing. She wanted to prove that another woman can compete in the sport.

“The cash prizes were not so important. This was more so important because it was a chance to get my name out there and to show that a female in a male-dominated industry could compete,” Graves said. “I had to prove that I could hang with the boys.”

Although this was an important event, the preparation was not too extraneous. Graves mentioned that the top focus for the event was making sure there were enough crew members and supplies.

However, she knew that the diesel community would look out for her with whatever, so she primarily focused on combating the pressure of winning her first race. Luckily, things went in her favor for her to get the win for her team.

“It was a lot of pressure knowing that it was my first time going into the first round, and everyone was going to be watching. It was honestly a lot of luck. My opponent had mechanical issues, and I just did my part by winning the race,” Graves said.

Graves and Team Hollyrock plan to compete in the 25th Annual Scheid Diesel Extravaganza Aug. 27-28 at Wagler Motorsports Parks in Lyons, Indiana. To learn more about the event, click HERE.
