The Newtowne Players announce open auditions for the upcoming musical Godspell. People interested in helping with the technical and support crew are also welcome. The show runs May 3-19, 2013. There are roles for 10-15 actors of all ages.

Godspell (music by Steven Schwartz, book by John-Michael Tebelak) is a pop-rock musical celebrating the Gospel according to Matthew. Jesus’ teachings come to life in a spirited and exuberant fashion and culminate in a poignant and powerful depiction of the Last Supper and crucifixion.

General auditions (choose one session) will be held Feb. 22 at 6:30 p.m. and Feb. 23 at 6:30 p.m. Callbacks will be held Feb. 25 at 6:30 p.m. All auditions will be held at Three Notch Theatre on 21744 South Coral Drive in Lexington Park.

Be prepared to sing a portion of one of the following songs from the show:

  • “Turn Back, O Man”

  • “We Beseech Thee”

  • “All Good Gifts”

  • “O Bless the Lord”

Copies of sheet music, marked with the particular song portion, will be available for pickup at the theatre in the evenings during rehearsals for The Lion in Winter. An accompanist will be provided at the auditions. Come dressed to dance and be prepared to learn and perform a short dance routine.

For callbacks, actors will be asked to show their ability to sing in harmony. (More sheet music will be made available.) Actors will perform in improvisational scenes designed to showcase their creativity and sense of teamwork. If you have special movement skills (e.g., gymnastics, juggling, tap, acrobatics, etc.), please be prepared to demonstrate them. If you play a portable instrument (especially guitar or banjo), you may be asked to bring it and play it at callbacks.

If you cannot make these audition dates/times but wish to work either onstage or backstage for this production, contact Director Michelle Freire at mebertfreire@gmail.com.
