ST. MARY’S CITY, Md. – A cage-building volunteer day is scheduled for 8:30 AM – 11:30 AM this Friday, July 27 at 19089 Point Lookout Road, Lexington Park. All eager helpers are encouraged to attend.
The St. Mary’s River Watershed Association relies on oyster cages to accomplish key portions of our work. Cages are used to house baby oysters at the docks of participating hosts who steward these little guys through their first year of life. They are collected in late spring and transferred to the St. Mary’s River sanctuary.
Every year we do maintenance on old cages and make new ones. Last summer we made 600 new cages. The goal this summer is to make 350 cages. A couple of weeks ago we had a volunteer day to help build cages, which brought us to a total of 135 cages so far this summer. Thank you to everyone who contributed that day!
Whether or not you were able to come that day or help out in past, we invite you to join us this Friday. Your efforts would be greatly appreciated.
