Detectives from the St. Mary’s Bureau of Criminal Investigations again arrested a man who was charged two days ago for allegedly exposing himself while he was on work-release from St. Mary’s County Detention Center.

Police say Vernon Jon Gifford, 62 of Lexington Park, committed a third-degree sex offense against a 7-year-old girl in 2005. He was arrested on that charge this morning.

Gifford, a retired Navy Chief Petty Officer, worked as a carpenter at the time and was helping the victim’s father at a California residence when he lured the victim into his van and had inappropriate contact with her, said Lt. Rick Burris, BCI Commander.

The incident occurred in November 2005, however detectives recently learned of the incident while investigating Gifford after his arrest Monday.

Police say Gifford, who is a registered sex offender, was on work release last week when he exposed himself to a 6-year-old girl. He was working at her residence in Lexington Park at the time.

Gifford remains in St. Mary’s County jail and his work release status was revoked after the first arrest this week.
