The St. Mary’s College men’s basketball team took one on the chin on Saturday afternoon at York in Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) action as the Spartans came away with an 86-56 victory over the Seahawks. The win was the eighth straight for the Spartans as they improve to 13-1 overall and 3-1 in the conference. The Seahawks fall to 6-8 overall and 1-3 in league play with their second consecutive conference road loss.
The Seahawks found themselves down by 16 points at halftime and were down by as many as 34 points at one point in the second half. St. Mary’s played the contest shorthanded as they were without the services of starting sophomore point guard Tyson Lesesne (Edgewood, MD/Edgewood) and forward Spencer Way III (Accokeek, MD/Gwynn Park).
Junior guard Dan Engelstad (Bethesda, MD/Whitman) led the Seahawks with 13 points and was 5-of-10 from the field. Senior forward Tommy Bushell (Gaithersburg, MD/Gaithersburg) added nine points and claimed a game-high tying seven rebounds in the contest. Freshman center Calvin Wise (Bel Air, MD/Calvert Hall) added eight points while sophomore forward T.J. Jordan (Bel Air, MD/Bel Air) added seven points and tied Bushell with seven rebounds.
York had three players in double figures and was led by Brandon Bushey’s 16 points. Kenny Fass added 15 points while Chad McGowan scored ten points. The Spartans had 15 players see action in the contest with none of the starters seeing more than 26 minutes of action.
The Seahawks will look to rebound on Wednesday, January 18, when they host Gallaudet University in a CAC contest. The game is scheduled to begin at 8:00 p.m.
The St. Mary’s College women’s basketball team fell on the road at York College, 83-70, in CAC action Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Spartans improved to 7-7 overall and 2-2 in the CAC while the Seahawks fell to 4-10 overall and 0-4 in conference play with their fourth consecutive loss.
Freshman forward Chanel Perez led all scorers with 20 points for the Spartans and was one of three players to record a double-double on the afternoon by collecting ten rebounds to go with her 20 points. Sophomore Kristen Daly scored 18 points and pulled down 11 rebounds while freshman guard Keli Ward added ten points with a game-high 12 rebounds and six assists.
The Seahawks had four players in double figures led by sophomore guard Taylor Yearwood’s (Washington DC/Holy Cross Academy) 16 points, including 8-of-10 from the free throw line. Sophomore guard Megan Uglik (Frederick, MD/Linganore) and sophomore forward Lisa Daciek (Laurel, MD/Atholton) both added 13 points while sophomore guard Avanti Fernandez (Bethesda, MD/Chevy Chase) scored ten points off the bench.
York won the battle of the boards by a 59-34 count. The edge in rebounds helped to mask a 22-11 turnover deficit and the Seahawks’ 13 total steals in the contest. The Spartans shot 44.4% from the field and held the Seahawks to 33.8% for the game.
The Seahawks will return to action on Monday afternoon when they host Trinity (DC) in a non-conference contest. The game is scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m.
