Welcome To Gospel Fest Brings Live Gospel Celebration To Southern Maryland: Enter To Win Tickets

PRINCE FREDERICK, Md. — This month, gospel lovers will have the chance to listen to an afternoon of unforgettable live music with local greats, hosted by the Calvert Lighthouse Church.

The Alice G. Brooks Memorial Concert will take place on Saturday, Aug. 22, from 3-6 p.m. at the Calvert County Fairgrounds, located in the event building at 140 Fair Drive in Prince Frederick. Tickets are on sale now for only $20 for people of all ages who wish to attend.

Brooks was called a “community mother” who invested hope into the future. Born Alice Gertrude Jones on Aug. 2, 1941, in Charles County, Maryland, she grew up as the eldest of 11 children — a role that demanded responsibility long before adulthood arrived. In 1958, she married Albert M. Brooks, becoming a stepmother to his two children and later raising eight more of their own. Her early life left little room for formal education, but it ignited a lifelong passion for ensuring others had the opportunities she did not. That passion became one of her defining callings.

Although raised in a religious household, Alice’s own personal relationship with God flourished when she joined Calvert Lighthouse in 1988. She quickly became a cornerstone of the congregation — not only spiritually, but operationally.

Brooks served on the church’s first fundraising committee, working tirelessly alongside her husband, Albert, her daughter Patricia, and son-in-law John. Their efforts, often centered around selling home-cooked dinners, helped pay off the church’s mortgage and stabilize its future. Her dedication earned her the beloved title “Mother of the Church,” a role she embodied with equal parts wisdom, wit and unwavering honesty. Brooks passed away unexpectedly in 2023.

“Our mother gave everything she had to her family, her church, and her community. Her faith was her anchor, her honesty kept us grounded, and her generosity lifted everyone around her. This Gospel Fest is our way of honoring the love she poured into all of us,” Brooks’ family wrote to The BayNet.

Brooks was a proud Southern Marylander, and concert organizers felt showcasing homegrown gospel talent was the best way to honor both her legacy and the legacy of the region. The proceeds of the concert will go toward Calvert Lighthouse Church and will establish the Brooks Family Scholarship, honoring her commitment to helping young people pursue their dreams.

Performers will include local and regional stars, including Owen Harrod, singer of the hit gospel single “He’s Able.” The lineup also includes The Christiannaires, William Tolson, Glory, and Calvert County’s own United Praise, among others.

Food will be available for purchase at this event, and all proceeds go toward Calvert Lighthouse Church. Tickets for the event are on sale now and are limited; only 400 seats are available for this once-in-a-lifetime concert event.

Church member and outreach/fundraising committee member Diana Newsom expressed hope that people would come out to the concert and bring their families, their friends and their neighbors. The church envisions an event where people can mentally and spiritually recharge from stressful lives.

“This is your concert,” Newsom said. “Although this is a fundraiser, we’ve tried to price the tickets so that most might be able to attend. We encourage you to bring your entire family, friends and neighbors. There aren’t too many opportunities where a community can come together to heal from the headlines, pray for our future and praise together.

“We know that there’s one thing that brings everyone together, it’s music.”
