steve lombardozzi signs with the washington nationals

WALDORF, MD—The Southern Maryland Blue Crabs announce the contract of shortstop Steve Lombardozzi has been purchased by the Washington Nationals Organization. Lombardozzi will report to the Syracuse Chiefs, the AAA affiliate of the Nationals.

To this point in the 2016 season Lombardozzi leads the league with a .367 batting average and 61 hits. In addition, Lombardozzi is in the top 5 with 166 at-bats, runs scored (27), and top ten in stolen bases (8).

Prior to being signed by the Blue Crabs, Lombardozzi played for the Washington Nationals, Pittsburgh Pirates, and Baltimore Orioles, while also spending time in the Cleveland Indians and Chicago White Sox farm systems. During his time in the Major Leagues, Lombardozzi had a .263 batting average, with 5 home runs and 52 RBIs.

“Steve has been a solid hitter and an exceptional leader in the clubhouse,” said Blue Crabs Manager Jeremy Owens. “We’ll miss him, but we are excited he is one step closer to the show.”

Lombardozzi became the first Blue Crab to sign with a Major League organization in the 2016 season, and the 19th Atlantic League player overall. The Blue Crabs return home for a three game set against the Long Island Ducks Friday, June 10 at 7:05 p.m.
