PRINCE FREDERICK, MD – Former Calvert County commissioner and local businessman William T. Bowen has died. According to Rausch Funeral Home, Bowen, 85 of Prince Frederick, passed away Sunday, June 28.
Bowen was born October 20, 1929 at Island Creek, educated in Calvert County Public Schools, attended Western Maryland College (now McDaniel ), and was a graduate of DeVry University with a masters electrician license.
In 1948 Bowen was instrumental in the formation of the Maryland National Guard Unit Co โAโ 121st Engineer Battalion at Prince Frederick, achieving the rank of chief warrant officer 2, and serving in the Army Reserves for 13 years.
For over 40 years, Bowen owned and operated a gas and propane business in St. Leonard.
Bowen was appointed by the Calvert County Board of Education to study the feasibility of the Vocational Education Program, resulting in the Calvert Career Center we now have. He also served on the Calvert Memorial Hospital Board of Directors for 17 years and on the Board of Directors of the Calvert County Chamber of Commerce for 5 years.
Bowen, a Democrat, was elected to serve on the Calvert County Board of County Commissioners from 1982-1990 and served as President for five years. He served as President of the Tri-County Council of Southern Maryland from 1985-1987.
