High winds are suspected in helping start a woods fire Sunday afternoon that consumed about an acre of ground, two cars and a trailer.

Firefighters were called at 3:15 p.m. when a controlled burn of brush and rubbish got out of control at 47207 Lincoln Avenue, Lexington Park.

Bay District Volunteer Fire Chief Wayne Johnson said near three-quarters of an acre was burning when firefighters arrived. The owner told officials the burn pile spread to the trailer, which was near 60 feet away.

“It was burning pretty crazy there for a while,” Johnson told The Bay Net, adding the fire seemed accidental in nature due to the wind.

Maryland Department of Natural Resources Forest Service responded and is investigating.

All volunteer fire companies responded from St. Mary’s County and Solomon’s Island, except Mechanicsville.

Johnson said the abandoned trailer was completely burned up. And the two cars lost had been sitting for a while and were overgrown.
