ย High winds are suspected in helping start a woods fire Sunday afternoon that consumed about an acre of ground, two cars and a trailer.

Firefighters were called at 3:15 p.m. when a controlled burn of brush and rubbish got out of control at 47207 Lincoln Avenue, Lexington Park.

ย Bay District Volunteer Fire Chief Wayne Johnson said near three-quarters of an acre was burning when firefighters arrived. The owner told officials the burn pile spread to the trailer, which was near 60 feet away.

ย โ€œIt was burning pretty crazy there for a while,โ€ Johnson told The Bay Net, adding the fire seemed accidental in nature due to the wind.

ย Maryland Department of Natural Resources Forest Service responded and is investigating.

All volunteer fire companies responded from St. Maryโ€™s County and Solomonโ€™s Island, except Mechanicsville.

ย Johnson said the abandoned trailer was completely burned up. And the two cars lost had been sitting for a while and were overgrown.
