84, of La Plata
John J. Stilwell, 84, of La Plata died June 29, 2004, at his home. He graduated from the University of Delaware with a degree in agriculture. He served in World War II in the South Pacific and European Theatres. He remained in the Army Reserves for 20 years, retiring with the rank of major. After the was he worked for the U.S. Department of Agriculture as a soil scientist. After his retirement, he worked for the Maryland Tobacco Authority for four years. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Military Retired Officers Association, Izaak Walton League and Boy Scouts of America. Born Aug. 3, 1919, in Wilmington, Del., he was the son of the late John Stilwell and the late Alice Bryan Stilwell. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Frank and son, Peter. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Dorothy Stilwell; sons, John III and his wife, Anne, of Mount Gilead, N.C., Michael and his wife, Deborah, of Seattle, Wash., Patrick and his wife, Marla, of San Antonio, Texas, and Timothy and his wife, Kelly, of Hampstead; eighte grandchildren; brothers, Paul and James Stilwell; and sisters, Alice McCoughan, Audrey Jones, Ann Mattiford and Jeanne Blackwood. Visitation and service took place July 3 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, La Plata. Burial will take place at a later date at Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Va.
