87, of Newburg
William Woodrow Phelps, 87, of Newburg died Jan. 16, 2005, at Civista Medical Center, La Plata. He was an office clerk with the U. S. Dept. of State Foreign Affairs. He was a member of the Spanish Club of College of Southern Maryland, American Legion for 18 years and La Plata United Methodist Church. Mr. Phelps was a U.S. Navy World War II veteran. Born Oct. 19, 1917, in Bowie, Maryland he was the son of the late William Preston and the late Ester Phelps. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, James Matthew Phelps, Carl Preston Phelps, Leslie D. Phelps, and Taylor J. Phelps; and sister, Esther Phelps Duvall. He is survived by his brother, Gerald N. Phelps of Winchester, Ca.; and many nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. until time of service at 11 a.m. Jan.19 at La Plata United Methodist Church, La Plata. The Rev. Edward Voorhaar will officate. Burial will take place at Mount Oak Methodist Church, Mitchellville. Arrangements are being handled by Arehart-Echols Funeral Home, La Plata.
