Lexington Park, MD – A spokesman for the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner (OCME) of Maryland reported late last week that the death of a St. Mary’s County man who was struck by a motor vehicle while walking in a roadway Monday evening, Aug. 13 has been ruled an accident. According to OCME spokesman Bruce Goldfarb, Richard Lee Summers Jr., 50 of Lexington Park died of multiple injuries sustained as a result of being struck by a 1998 Pontiac Trans Sport minivan on the northbound side of Three Notch Road in the area of Bay Forest Road. The incident occurred at approximately 9:24 p.m.

The driver of the minivan, a 32-year-old Lexington Park woman, told police she initially thought she had struck a deer and drove to her residence. However, she reported the collision to authorities. Law enforcement and emergency responders were dispatched to the area where the collision occurred. Summers was located there and pronounced dead. At this time, it does not appear the driver faces any charges. She did not sustain any injuries in the collision.

An initial investigation by the St. Mary’s Sheriff’s Office determined Summers was partially covered by a dark blanket at the time of the collision. The OCME report does not cite alcohol consumption as a factor in Summers’ death.

The St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office has asked that anyone who may have witnessed to Aug. 13 collision to contact Cpl. Christopher Beyer at 301-475-4200, ext. 8804 or by email at Christopher.Beyer@stmarysmd.com
