The fifth annual St. Mary’s Animal Welfare League Animal Fair will be held on Saturday, May 9, 2009 at the St. Mary’s County Fairground from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The SMAWL Animal Fair is a festival attended by over 1,100 people and their pets. It is a day for people and their pets to play and shop together. The fair features non-stop demonstrations, pet games, vendors, micro-chipping, a pet pageant, equine demonstrations, a pet parade and much more.
The purpose of the Animal Fair is to create interest and generate support for local animal welfare and rescue groups and their supporting industries. The goal is to stage a quality event in order to help SMAWL raise much needed funds to continue our no-kill rescue and adoption program.
Homeless and neglected animals of the community count on SMAWL to be their voice. There are several ways that people can contribute to the effort. Those interested can become event sponsors, rent a vendor space for only $25.00 or volunteer time.
SMAWL is a nonprofit membership organization working to help the homeless, abused, and neglected animals in the local community and, in times of extreme need, helps the larger national rescue community.
SMAWL’s Immediate goals include aggressive campaigns to find homes for homeless cats and dogs and to curb pet overpopulation through spay/neuter programs.
Future goals include the building of a no-kill shelter in St. Mary’s County. Services provided include pet adoptions, discount spay/neuter vouchers, monthly low-cost rabies clinics, and humane education. SMAWL is an all-volunteer organization and welcomes new members and volunteers. SMAWL offers a variety of volunteer opportunities, including fostering animals waiting for adoption.
