The Newtowne Players announce auditions for comedy-thriller Deathtrap, by Ira Levin, which runs Thursdays through Sundays, Aug. 2-18, 2013.

Auditions will be held May 6 and May 8 from 6-9 p.m. at Three Notch Theatre on 21744 South Coral Drive in Lexington Park. Scripts will be available at 5:30 p.m. No appointment is necessary, and actors may arrive at any time within the auditions. Callbacks will be held May 11 at 10 a.m.

In Deathtrap, a successful writer of Broadway thrillers struggles to overcome a โ€œdryโ€ spell. A possible break in his fortunes occurs when he receives a script from a student in the seminar he has been conducting at a nearby college โ€” a thriller he recognizes immediately as a potential Broadway hit.

There are parts for three men and two women, ranging in age from 18-70. Character descriptions are listed below:

  • Sidney Bruhl โ€“ male, age 40-60. Polished, dashing, devious, clever, thinks heโ€™s the smartest man in the room and wants people to know it. Is โ€œon stageโ€ even when at home. Requires kissing between Sidney and Myra.

  • Clifford Anderson – male, age 20-30. Student. Looks physically fit, good looking, clever. Knows heโ€™s the smartest man in the room and can bide his time to display it.

  • Myra Bruhl โ€“ female, age 35-60. Sophisticated, upper class but embraces the country life. Innocent, sweet, caring, emotional, nervous, even skittish, supportive of Sydneyโ€™s career and moods but grows some backbone when he crosses the line. Requires kissing between Sidney and Myra.

  • Helga ten Dorp โ€“ female, age 18-70. Psychic. Wild, individual, Gypsy-like. Is in and out of this world. Knows she’s a celebrity and buys into the show of her gift. Has a Dutch accent. Is disarming and brave when faced with pain and violence.

  • Porter Milgrim โ€“ male, age 30-70. Professional, solid, observant.
