The Newtowne Players announce auditions for comedy-thriller Deathtrap, by Ira Levin, which runs Thursdays through Sundays, Aug. 2-18, 2013.
Auditions will be held May 6 and May 8 from 6-9 p.m. at Three Notch Theatre on 21744 South Coral Drive in Lexington Park. Scripts will be available at 5:30 p.m. No appointment is necessary, and actors may arrive at any time within the auditions. Callbacks will be held May 11 at 10 a.m.
In Deathtrap, a successful writer of Broadway thrillers struggles to overcome a “dry” spell. A possible break in his fortunes occurs when he receives a script from a student in the seminar he has been conducting at a nearby college — a thriller he recognizes immediately as a potential Broadway hit.
There are parts for three men and two women, ranging in age from 18-70. Character descriptions are listed below:
- Sidney Bruhl – male, age 40-60. Polished, dashing, devious, clever, thinks he’s the smartest man in the room and wants people to know it. Is “on stage” even when at home. Requires kissing between Sidney and Myra.
- Clifford Anderson – male, age 20-30. Student. Looks physically fit, good looking, clever. Knows he’s the smartest man in the room and can bide his time to display it.
- Myra Bruhl – female, age 35-60. Sophisticated, upper class but embraces the country life. Innocent, sweet, caring, emotional, nervous, even skittish, supportive of Sydney’s career and moods but grows some backbone when he crosses the line. Requires kissing between Sidney and Myra.
- Helga ten Dorp – female, age 18-70. Psychic. Wild, individual, Gypsy-like. Is in and out of this world. Knows she’s a celebrity and buys into the show of her gift. Has a Dutch accent. Is disarming and brave when faced with pain and violence.
- Porter Milgrim – male, age 30-70. Professional, solid, observant.
