On June 4th the annual Torch Run Event for Special Olympics kicked off once again here in Calvert County.ย  This year, a large turnout of approximately 35 runners and bikers participated, representing the Calvert County Sheriffโ€™s Office, Maryland State Police Barrack โ€œUโ€, the Calvert County Detention Center, and several other Maryland agencies.ย

The event started in front of the Sheriffโ€™s Office just after 8:30 a.m.ย  The participants then proceeded to Calvert Country School where they met with students, then, on to the Solomons Visitor Center to start the run and bike ride.ย  Just after 10:00 a.m. the runners and bikers proceeded out of Solomons for the long trek north to Prince Frederick.ย  Along the route the general public honked their horns and cheered on the runners and bikers as they proceeded up Md. Rt. 4.ย  The event concluded at the Outback Steakhouse where everyone enjoyed ice cold beverages and sandwiches.ย  Outback Steakhouse and Nickโ€™s of Calvert once again assisted in sponsoring this event.ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย

Special Olympics Maryland is a yearโ€“round sports training and competition program for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. Special Olympics serves 10,000 athletes around the state, offering over twenty different sports.ย  The goal this year was to sell over $1,000 worth of tee-shirts and hats with proceeds going toward Special Olympics.ย  Although this goal has sometimes been a struggle in recent years, this year that goal has already been surpassed.ย  Thanks to all who have supported the Special Olympics cause by purchasing an item.ย  Torch Run tee-shirts and hats are still available for purchase by contacting F/Sgt. Bill Soper or Tina Jones at the Sheriffโ€™s Office at 410-535-2800.
