Chaptico, MD — A man rescued from a fiery crash in St. Mary’s County by good Samaritans has died from injuries sustained in the crash.

Around 3:47 a.m. on Wednesday morning, a 1999 Ford Ranger operated by Garland Lawson Coleman, age 83, of Chaptico, was traveling northbound on Longview Road.

Police aren’t sure why, but the truck drove through the intersection and into a field and became disabled in a ditch alongside Bay Drive.

The vehicle caught fire, trapping Coleman inside. Fortunately, he was pulled from the burning truck by citizens who had heard the crash before police and fire arrived on the scene.

He was transported to a local trauma center and succumbed to his injuries on Thursday night at approximately 8:50 p.m.

The St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office Collision Reconstruction Unit responded to the scene and continued the investigation.

At this time speed and alcohol do not appear to be contributing factors in the collision.
