Thompson and Ellie Cantrell

A crowd of friends, family and acquaintances gathered Tuesday night at Catamaranโ€™s in Solomonโ€™s to remember Robin โ€œCookieโ€ Thompson, who died suddenly March 31.

A benefit was held to help the two sons, Jason and Nicholas, of the โ€œgentle giantโ€, as some remember him, pay for his final expenses. Thompson died at 51 of an apparent heart failure.

Thompson was well known on Solomonโ€™s Island. He most recently worked security at Catamaranโ€™s, but during his 10 years off and on at the restaurant/bar he was also a chef.

โ€œHe was the best chef I ever had,โ€ said girlfriend of two years Ellie Cantrell, who has knownย Thomson for 24 years.

During his 22 years cooking, he also worked as a chef for Damonโ€™s, Neptunes, Holiday Inn and Asbury retirement center.

โ€œHe was awesome,โ€ said Cantrell, who added he also loved his motorcycle and was a member of the Maryland Knights motorcycle club.

โ€œIt was a really great turnout,โ€ Cantrell said of the benefit.

โ€œEven though he was really outgoing and funny, he was also humble and he would have been surprised by the number of people there,โ€ she added.

โ€œHe touched so many peopleโ€™s lives โ€ฆ Everybody who met him went away with a smile.โ€

Anyone who missed Cookieโ€™s benefit and is interested in helping his sons can contact The Bay Net to be put in touch with his family.
