LUSBY, Md. — A Scotland man is facing an assault charge after deputies alleged he punched another man during an altercation at Driftwood Beach in Lusby, according to court records.
Court records show Mark Michael Spears, 38, of Scotland, was charged with second-degree assault following an incident reported on June 4, 2026, at Driftwood Beach in Lusby.
According to charging documents, a Calvert County Sheriff’s Office deputy responded to a residence in Lusby at approximately 6:41 p.m. on June 4 after receiving a report of an assault. The complainant told investigators he had been involved in a confrontation with Spears at Driftwood Beach earlier that day.
Court records state the complainant reported a verbal altercation occurred between the two men while they were at the beach. According to the statement of charges, the dispute escalated after the complainant attempted to leave the area in his vehicle.
Investigators allege Spears approached the complainant after he exited his vehicle and punched him in the face with a closed fist, knocking him to the ground. Court documents further state that, while the complainant was on the ground, Spears allegedly continued striking him.
Following the incident, the complainant told deputies that Spears left Driftwood Beach in a vehicle and drove away from the area. Calvert County Emergency Medical Services personnel later responded and evaluated the complainant.
Authorities conducted an attempt to locate Spears following the reported assault but were unable to find him at that time, according to the charging documents.
According to court records, Spears was charged with second-degree assault and a summons was issued June 10, 2026.
A preliminary inquiry hearing has been scheduled for July 27, 2026, in Calvert District Court.
