Sophia Blackwell is a Lexington Park–based journalist who has called Southern Maryland home since 2011. A graduate of the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, she discovered her passion for journalism through the Media and Communications program, where she was especially drawn to political writing and hands-on media creation. Her reporting interests center on politics, policy and governance, as well as science-driven stories exploring human behavior, health and our relationship with the natural world, with a particular focus on work that highlights service, altruism and positive community impact. At heart, Sophia is a creator, expressing her creativity through writing, video, photography and art, both professionally and in her personal life. A determined and hardworking mother of two, she balances her career with a deep commitment to family and enjoys spending time with her children. Together, they practice taekwondo at Master Sung’s Blackbelt Academy in Leonardtown, explore the outdoors through hiking and nature adventures, and spend time beach walking along the water, collecting seashells, shark teeth, and sea glass. The family also loves going on long walks with their golden retriever, Ivy and doing arts and crafts.
