Calvert Commissioner Evan Slaughenhoupt reads proclamation to Northern High School’s 2017 Boys’ Lacrosse Team.
Prince Frederick, MD – A team that made regional sports history was celebrated at the Tuesday, July 25 meeting of the Calvert County Commissioners. The Northern High School (NHS) Boys Lacrosse Team recently capped off an 18-2 season by winning the Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association 2A/3A championship in that sport. The Patriots’ LAX squad shaded Glenelg High of Howard County 5-4 to capture the crown. In doing so, NHS became the first school from Calvert County and the Southern Maryland Athletic Conference (SMAC) to win a boys’ lacrosse championship. Among its other accomplishments were a Chesapeake Division title, an eighth consecutive SMAC championship and NHS’ first male sports state title since 1995. The Patriots were coached by Joe Casalino, who was assisted by Wayne Daniel, Justin Wood and Aaron Wood.
Casalino told the commissioners and other meeting attendees that he was extremely proud of the team’s achievement. “They are real representative of the things we want from young men,” said Casalino.
“You can bet we boast about our high schools,” said Commissioner Pat Nutter, who noted his younger brothers, children and grandchildren all attended NHS. Nutter added that Calvert high schools are “high caliber” when it comes to academics and athletics.
“You never stop competing,” said Commissioner Mike Hart. “Year in and year out, we have champions come in here.”
Commissioners’ President Tom Hejl commended the NHS Boys Lacrosse coaching staff, who he stated, “did a fine job getting you [the team] there [championship game].”
In presenting a proclamation to the team, Commissioner Evan Slaughenhoupt stated he always enjoys seeing Calvert sports teams beat their counterparts from Howard County.
Noting that the team has only a few seniors, Hart told the squad, “we expect you back here next year.”
