PRINCE FREDERICK, Md. — Calvert County is continuing its ongoing efforts to update accessibility around the county and achieve compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). The most recent changes include added handicapped parking spaces and policy updates.

In September 2024, the Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) adopted the ADA Self-Evaluation and Transition Plan. This plan outlined the county’s long-term strategy to address accessibility needs in facilities, programs, policies and services. During the plan’s adoption, staff committed to providing annual updates to the BOCC. The plan serves as a roadmap to updating accessibility, policies and services throughout the county. The Department of Community Resources will provide yearly updates.

“Our goal is to make sure that residents with disabilities can fully access county programs and services,” Special Project Manager Kieko Nash said during the presentation.

According to Nash, 46 projects were identified in the plan, 17 have been completed, 13 are in progress, and 16 have not yet started.

This year, officials made several key updates to online resources:

  • Updated ADA webpage with feedback and implemented new grievance procedures.
  • Completed service animal and device mobility policies.
  • Assigned department liaisons for implementation and accountability.

Planned projects for the year will include partnering with public works for the removal and updating of physical barriers. Priorities include van-accessible parking, lot striping, lowering curbs and adding ramps. $12,000 was also added to operating for braille and American Sign Language (ASL) interpreting services across all departments.

The presentation is available online.
