PRINCE FREDERICK, Md. — The Linda L. Kelley Animal Shelter in Calvert County gets to celebrate an exciting milestone — 4,000 animals have found their forever homes through the shelter since its founding in November 2018.
In a Facebook post celebrating the milestone, the shelter thanked their “awesome volunteers and hardworking staff” for helping make this incredible achievement possible.
“Our team goes above and beyond to make sure every animal finds the right match. They set up meet-and-greets, feed and clean, help with paperwork and share helpful tips with adopters to make the transition smooth. At the same time, our volunteers also help keep things running day in and day out by cleaning, walking, cuddling and giving our adoptable pets lots of love. Every milestone means another life changed for the better,” the post says.
The shelter is named after former County Commissioner Linda Kelley. According to the county’s website, Kelley, an Owings resident, was widely known as a vocal and committed advocate of animal rights and their safe and humane treatment. The Linda L. Kelley Animal Shelter is dedicated to fulfilling Mrs. Kelley’s vision for the humane treatment of animals and providing resources for the citizens of Calvert County.
The Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) helps keep Kelley’s spirit going in their weekly animal presentations. Each week, an adoptable animal attends the BOCC meeting and is presented to the commissioners and the public. That animal’s adoption fee is then waived for the week. The shelter also gets the word out about animals through its “Live at Linda’s” series on the county government’s YouTube channel.
“Reaching 4,000 adoptions at the Linda L. Kelley Animal Shelter is an incredible milestone for our community,” said April Coleman, Deputy Director of Animal Services in an email to The BayNet. “Each adoption represents a life saved and someone gaining a forever friend. We are so grateful to our staff, volunteers and residents who continue to support our mission and choose adoption.”
The shelter is open for adoptions Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. You can view adoptable pets online or contact the shelter for more information.
