Calvert Detectives Use License Plate Readers, Cellphone Data To Identify Suspect In Alleged $90,000 Lexus Theft

CHESAPEAKE BEACH, Md. — An Upper Marlboro man is facing felony charges after Calvert County Sheriff’s Office detectives alleged he participated in the theft of a luxury vehicle valued at approximately $90,000. According to court documents, investigators used license plate reader data, surveillance footage, and cellphone records to identify him as a suspect.

Gregory John Price, 34, of Upper Marlboro, was charged in the District Court for Calvert County with felony unlawful taking of a motor vehicle and felony theft of property valued between $25,000 and $100,000. The charges stem from the June 18, 2026, theft of a white 2024 Lexus GX550 from Horizons on the Bay in Chesapeake Beach.

According to the statement of probable cause, deputies responded at approximately 11 a.m. June 18 to Horizons on the Bay, located at 8501 Bayside Road, for a report of a stolen vehicle. The owner reported that her white 2024 Lexus GX550 had been stolen overnight from the resort’s parking lot. Investigators valued the SUV at approximately $90,000.

During the investigation, detectives reviewed Automatic License Plate Reader (ALPR) data and observed the stolen Lexus traveling westbound on Route 260 shortly after 3 a.m. June 18. Investigators also identified a black Ford F-450 pickup truck bearing Virginia registration traveling immediately behind the stolen Lexus. According to charging documents, the two vehicles were captured traveling in tandem through Calvert County before continuing into Prince George’s County.

Deputies also reviewed surveillance footage from Horizons on the Bay that allegedly showed the suspect vehicle arriving at the property shortly after 1 a.m. Detectives reported the pickup truck later departed the area, followed by the stolen Lexus approximately one minute later. Additional ALPR data allegedly showed both vehicles leaving Calvert County together via Route 261 before continuing north.

Investigators traced the pickup truck’s registration to Price and conducted surveillance at his Upper Marlboro residence later that day, where they observed the truck parked outside. Detectives also reviewed law enforcement databases before contacting the Prince George’s County Police Department’s Washington Area Vehicle Enforcement Unit. Detectives with that unit advised they had previous contacts with Price in recent months.

As part of the investigation, detectives obtained court-authorized search warrants for historical location records associated with a cellphone investigators believed belonged to Price. According to court documents, the records were analyzed using mapping software and allegedly showed the phone traveling from Upper Marlboro toward Chesapeake Beach on the night of June 17 before communicating with cellular towers near Horizons on the Bay during the early morning hours of June 18. Detectives alleged the phone’s movements closely matched the timeline established through surveillance footage and ALPR data before returning toward Prince George’s County later that morning.

On July 15, detectives, assisted by the Prince George’s County Police Department Emergency Services Team, executed a search warrant at Price’s Upper Marlboro residence. Investigators located the black Ford F-450 parked outside and seized several cellphones during the search, including one investigators identified as Price’s work phone.

According to court records, detectives later conducted a recorded interview with Price after advising him of his Miranda rights. During the interview, investigators alleged Price admitted driving the Ford F-450 to Horizons on the Bay during the early morning hours of June 18 and dropping off another individual to steal the Lexus. Charging documents further allege Price admitted following behind the stolen SUV after the theft.

Court records show Price initially was held without bond following his arrest July 15. At a bail review hearing on July 16, 2026, Judge Michelle R. Saunders set bail at a $10,000 percentage bond, which court records indicate was posted with a $1,000 cash deposit, resulting in Price’s release pending trial. He is scheduled to appear for a trial-officer scheduling hearing Sept. 23, 2026, in Calvert County District Court.
