The 10th anniversary of the attack on America (9/11) is to be commemorated Friday, Sept. 9 in all Calvert County Public Schools.
During the Sept. 8 meeting of the Calvert County Board of Education (BOE), Supervisor of Instruction for Social Studies Scott McComb revealed a statement that will be read in all the schools prior to the showing of a seven-minute film. The film was produced by the September 11 National Memorial and Museum. It gives an overview of the many altruistic initiatives that were launched in the wake of the tragedy.
“I’m sure you all remember the spirit of unity, the pulling together,” said McComb. “We think it’s important to have our students reflect on this. Many of our students want an opportunity to be generous.”
Four commercial planes were hijacked by terrorists Sept. 11, 2001. Thousands died as two of the aircraft crashed into the World Trade Center twin towers in New York City and a third plane crashed into the Pentagon. A fourth plane crashed in Shanksville, PA. That fourth plane was likely aimed at another landmark target. However, there is evidence passengers on that flight heroically confronted the terrorists, losing their lives but avoiding a bigger tragedy.
The commemorations in the schools will begin the weekend-long observance of 9/11 in Calvert County.
On Sunday, Sept. 11, the Town of Chesapeake Beach will hold a memorial service at Veterans’ Park at the Route 260-Route 261 intersection. The ceremony begins at 2 p.m.
The St. Paul’s Chorale, accompanied by a chamber orchestra, will present “The Rutter Requiem” in remembrance of the victims of 9/11 at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Prince Frederick. The performance begins at 3 p.m. in the church.
