WHITE PLAINS, Md. — Caribbean flavors are returning to a well-known Crain Highway location as Carib Fusions Restaurant prepares to open Friday, May 8, 2026, in the former Cool Runnings space.
Located at 4451 Crain Highway, the new restaurant brings a family-centered approach to Caribbean cooking, led by Janet Henry. Her son, Brian Baker, will be working alongside her daily, joined by her friend and fellow cook, Miss Lynette.
During a brief interview ahead of opening, Baker said the opportunity to take over the space came together quickly, and the family decided to move forward when the chance presented itself — marking their first business. He added that they are local to Charles County and live just minutes from the restaurant, giving the new spot a true neighborhood feel.
He shared that much of the inspiration behind the restaurant comes from his mother’s years of cooking for church gatherings and small community events — an experience that now carries into the family’s first restaurant venture.
Baker said he has always had a passion for food and often travels in search of great meals. He said he believes people will do the same for his mother’s cooking. He said one of the best parts of a great restaurant is the smell — the rich aroma of spices and fresh cooking that greets you at the door — and added he expects his mother’s cooking to bring that same experience to customers.
The menu will feature a mix of Jamaican and Guyanese dishes, including beef patties, curried chicken, jerk chicken, saltfish and bakes, chicken patties and stewed oxtail.
Carib Fusions replaces Cool Runnings, which closed in late 2025. The transition allows Caribbean cuisine to remain in a location already familiar to customers seeking island-inspired meals, while introducing a new family-driven concept.
The BayNet was able to step inside the restaurant ahead of opening, where new equipment is in place and the kitchen is ready. The excitement was evident from Baker as final preparations were underway.
Preparations, including permits, equipment installation and kitchen setup, have been completed ahead of the opening.
Head over May 8 through May 10 for the grand opening weekend, grab a plate and help welcome this family’s first business to the community.
“You gonna love my momma’s cooking,” Baker said with a smile.
