LA PLATA, Md. – The Board of Education at its April 17 meeting honored seven Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) students for outstanding academic and personal accomplishments. Students are chosen by their principal for recognition and receive the honor in one of three focal areas – academic achievement, career readiness and personal responsibility.
Honored by the Board were Carsyn Martin, Maia Parker, James “Trey” Roberts III, Jasmine Ross, Amari Seldon, Keara Watkins and Autumn White.
Martin is a fifth-grade student at J.C. Parks Elementary School. She was honored before the Board in the area of academic achievement. She is an honor roll student and receives gifted education services. She loves to read and enjoys writing essays about books in which she can cite text evidence and show a connection with the author. Martin is quick to help her teachers and peers in need of assistance and is a leader in the classroom. She also participates in several Parks activities such as Destination Imagination (DI), Mathematics, Engineering and Science Achievement (MESA), Lego Robotics, the school chorus and art club. Outside of school, Martin enjoys soccer, making crafts, swimming and cheerleading.
Parker is a senior at North Point High School. The Board recognized her for her accomplishments in the area of academic achievement. Parker is enrolled in the Education Careers program at North Point and is an honor roll student. Since she started high school, Parker has maintained at least a 4.0 GPA and taken several Advanced Placement (AP) classes. She serves as a role model and leader for her peers and is a role model for the children in the North Point childcare center. Parker works with her peers to support a positive school climate and is a member of the school’s Academic Eagles program. Earlier this year, Parker earned a first-place award at the SkillsUSA regional event in the childcare competition and will compete at the state level later this month.
Roberts is a fifth-grade student at Walter J. Mitchell Elementary School. He was honored before the Board in the area of personal responsibility. He has attended Mitchell since kindergarten and earned Principal’s Honor Roll every quarter since third grade. He consistently demonstrates the school rules of being respectful, acting responsibly, respecting learning and being safe. Roberts is a self-motivated learner and demonstrates an admirable work ethic in the classroom. He is a member of the Mitchell math and robotics teams and recently spent time outside of school researching designs to improve his robot. Roberts’ peers admire him for his leadership, dedication and commitment to his studies. Outside of school, Roberts is a Cub Scout and active in his church youth group.
Ross is a fifth-grade student at Malcolm Elementary School. She was recognized before the Board for her accomplishments in the area of career readiness. Since she began kindergarten at Malcolm, Ross has stood out among her peers as a leader and role model. She models a positive attitude in all that she does and helps her classmates in need of assistance. Ross’ teachers describe her as an exemplary student who is goal oriented, polite and hard working. Outside of school, Ross enjoys playing the piano, gymnastics and drawing. Ross also loves to take pictures and hopes to pursue a career in photography.
Seldon is an eighth-grade student at Mattawoman Middle School. He was honored for his accomplishments in the area of academic achievement. For the past two school years, Seldon has earned A’s in all classes. His teachers describe him as a self-motivated learner who takes great pride in his work. He helps his classmates when they need assistance and models a positive attitude. Seldon demonstrates kindness daily and is well respected by his peers.
Watkins is a senior at St. Charles High School and was recognized in the area of personal responsibility. Watkins exemplifies leadership and is a role model for her classmates. She is an honor roll student, president of the Student Government Association (SGA) and captain of the varsity volleyball team. Throughout her educational career at St. Charles, Watkins has held several additional leadership roles including class president, public relations officer of the National Honor Society and SGA vice president. Her teachers describe her as an inquisitive and creative thinker who thirsts for knowledge, and her peers view her as someone who represents the epitome of responsibility. Outside of school, Watkins is an avid violinist and is active in her church.
White is a fifth-grade student at Mary B. Neal Elementary School. She was recognized by the Board in the area of career readiness. She is known among her teachers as a hard worker who tries her best and cares about her work. She excels in the classroom and is dedicated, kind and respectful. White is an ambassador at Neal, which means she helps to host events and school spirit days. She is a leader among her fellow ambassadors and manages her responsibilities in a gracious and outstanding manner. White aspires to become either a teacher or a lawyer so she can do something that helps others. Her positive attitude and caring demeanor is admired by both her teachers and peers.
The Board each month honors CCPS students and staff for outstanding accomplishments and exemplary achievements. Principals select one student and staff member annually for recognition before the Board.
