The College of Southern Maryland will welcome Rosa Parks, George Wallace, Malcolm X and Martin Luther King Jr. as part of the Maryland Humanities Council annual Chautauqua program. This yearโs theme is Civil Rights: Taking a Stand in commemoration of the 40th anniversary of Kingโs assassination.
The free program will run from Monday, July 7, to Thursday, July 10, from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. under the big tent at the CSM La Plata Campus, 8730 Mitchell Road, La Plata.
July 7
Martin Luther King Jr. will be featured on Monday, July 7.ย ย Musical entertainment will be provided by The New Community Church of God In Christ Gospel Choir, followed by the eveningโs historical performance. The African-American Heritage Society of Charles County will present an historical display representing the lives of African-Americans in Charles County.
July 8
George Wallace will be featured on Tuesday, July 8. Musical entertainment will be provided by David and Ginger Hildebrand, singing music of the 1960s, followed by the eveningโs historical performance. The Southern Maryland Studies Center will present as historical display representing the lives of African-Americans in Southern Maryland.
July 9
Rosa Parks will be featured on Wednesday, July 9. Musical entertainment will be provided by The New Community Church of God In Christ Gospel Choir, followed by the eveningโs historical performance. The Unified Committee for Afro-American Contributions will present an historical display representing the lives of African-Americans in St. Maryโs County.
July 10
Malcolm X. will be featured on Thursday, July 10. Musical entertainment will be provided by Eric Scott, followed by the eveningโs historical performance. The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, Calvert County Branch, will present an historical display representing the lives of African-Americans in Calvert County.
